Common Questions Regarding Your CT Exam
Do I need referral to get a CT?
Yes. Your doctor must give you a referral (prescription) for your exam. Insurance companies require a physician signed referral stating the procedure, diagnosis and reason you are having the exam for it to be covered.
How do I get my results?
Results from your exam may be obtained from your doctor. Your referring physician will contact you with the results or discuss them with you at your scheduled follow-up appointment.
Will my exam hurt?
The test itself is completely painless. Depending on the type of study being done, you may be injected with, or be asked to drink, contrast material. This part of the procedure may be uncomfortable.
How long will the examination take?
Each MRI is tailored for the most optimal diagnosis requested by the referring physician. From start to finish, the picture-taking part of the test usually lasts only 10 to 15 minutes. A CT exam may take anywhere from 5 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the type of procedure being performed.

Can I have an MRI if I am pregnant?
You should not have a CT if you are, or think you might be pregnant. Because x-rays can harm a developing fetus, your doctor may recommend an alternative diagnostic exam with fewer risks.
